How do robotics teams find reliable CNC machining suppliers?

Robotics teams need CNC suppliers with experience in tight-tolerance aluminum, steel, and titanium, and the ability to handle small-batch runs—typically five to fifty pieces—with repeatability. The most common failure mode is selecting a supplier based on price alone and discovering mid-run that their setup doesn't hold the tolerance the assembly requires. Price without a review of the 2D drawing and the supplier's inspection infrastructure is not a real quote.

Why this becomes hard

CNC capability varies enormously. A shop that handles automotive one-offs may not be set up for fifty-piece batches of 6061-T6 brackets with 0.01mm positional tolerances. Surface finish specs, thread callouts, and secondary operations—anodizing, heat treat, bead blast—add complexity that doesn't show up until a revision cycle. Shops that deprioritize small jobs will extend your lead time without warning.

What teams usually miss

Missing 2D drawings with GD&T callouts are the most common quote blocker. Suppliers need drawings—not just STEP files—to understand tolerances, datum references, and critical features. STEP files alone don't encode tolerance: a ±0.1mm fit and a ±0.01mm precision bore look identical in a 3D model. Teams also frequently omit material temper (6061-T6 vs 7075-T651) and surface finish specification, both of which affect cost and lead time.

What KnowYi does

KnowYi reviews your STEP files and 2D drawings, flags missing callouts or underdefined features, and routes your parts to CNC suppliers matched to your batch size and material requirements. We return dimensional inspection reports and manufacturing photos against your drawing with every lot—not a supplier's verbal confirmation.

What to send us

Send STEP or IGES files plus 2D drawings (PDF or DXF) with tolerance callouts. Include material specification and temper, surface finish specification, batch quantity, and any critical delivery dates.

If you already have CAD, drawings, BOM, Gerbers, or even an incomplete file package, send it to KnowYi. We can turn it into a clear manufacturing path with missing inputs identified, quote blockers flagged, supplier routing handled, production records maintained, and delivery evidence returned.
