How do you keep robot hardware consistent across units?

Unit-to-unit hardware consistency in robot builds requires: a locked BOM with no unreviewed substitutions, controlled drawing revisions with all critical tolerances explicitly called out, supplier-consistent material and process specifications, first-article inspection before each production run, and a per-unit build record that captures any deviations. Without all of these, consistency depends on luck rather than process.

Why this becomes hard

Hardware variation is cumulative. Each small source of variance—a BOM substitution, a tolerance not checked, a surface finish not specified, a cable routed differently by the assembler—is individually minor but compounds across units and across batches. Field failures that manifest as intermittent or hard-to-reproduce problems are often manufacturing variance problems.
